If we do not have the opportunity to screen children early, the most common time to initiate orthodontic treatment is approximately age 10 to 12. By this time, all the baby teeth have usually fallen out, and most of the permanent teeth have erupted and the tooth straightening can begin! Remember, while we can still address many of the tooth-related concerns, some of the jaw and bite issues may not be as predictable or stable to treat at this stage of growth & development.
In spite of this, getting braces is a still popular rite of passage for many children and teenagers, something they share with many other children their age. Many can hardly wait until they get their braces and see the magic start to happen! While it is never too late for orthodontic treatment, wearing braces or Invisalign® as a teenager can still take advantage of the natural growth spurt which occurs during these developmental years.
